(Cushing)    March is Youth Arts Month.  Cushing Public Schools and the Lachenmeyer Arts Center are combining efforts to celebrate and recognize our youth during Youth Arts Month.  Currently on exhibit at the Lachenmeyer Arts Center is the 21st Annual Youth Arts Show.  The show will be on display March 1 - 12, 2010.

The Youth Arts Show consists of artwork from Cushing High School students studying under M.J. Henderson-Smith and Cushing Middle School students studying with Betty Bowen.  Harrison Elementary School is represented by students from Mrs. Fritts' Kindergarten and Mrs. Calavan's 1st Grades classes.  Ms. Cindy's students represent Wilson School's Prekindergarten class.  The show also includes artwork from students taking art classes at the Lachenmeyer Arts Center with director Rob Smith.

Although there is never an official theme for the Youth Arts Show portraits are the common entry.  Three large 5' x 7' drawings were submitted by Cushing High School.  Art I students were randomly given a one inch square cut from a photograph to draw.  The students didn't know who the image was.  When the drawings are combined the portrait of a CHS senior student is revealed.  Several Cushing Middle School students have carved an alabaster portrait of one of the middle school teachers.  Mrs. Calavan's 1st graders have created an interesting set of self-portraits.

The Thompson Foundation is sponsoring several People's Choice Award.  The winner from the Cushing High School category will receive a gift certificate of $50 to Hobby Lobby.  Winners from the Cushing Middle School category and the elementary school category will each receive a gift certificate for $25 to Hobby Lobby.  Any one visiting the Youth Arts Show can vote for their favorite work of art.

The Lachenmeyer Arts Center is located in the Cushing Youth & Community Center at 700 S. Little Ave.  Gallery hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Monday, Wednesday & Friday and 6:00 to 9:00 pm on Tuesday & Thursday.  For more information call Rob Smith at 225-7525.
