(Cushing, Okla.) "It's a God thing," Joyce Abrams told Donna & Molly Show listeners last Tuesday as she talked about the upcoming walk the Disciples for a Cure Relay for Life Team was planning on Saturday, April 28th. "Jeff (Post) said he was asking God what he should do for Relay and it came to him - walk from Mannford to Cushing."
And walk they did.
Abrams and Post and several other team members started walking bright and early Saturday morning and did not give up until they reached their destination - near the track of Cushing High School.
Fellow team members, Relay for Life event chair Dedra Marotta, and other supporters were there to welcome the tired, but happy, crew as they finished the 32 mile journey.
Marotta and Melanie Vier surprised the walkers by placing purple ribbon-clad markers with the names of the ones they were walking for, along their path between Drumright and Cushing.
"You don't know how much that meant to us seeing those," Abrams said.
A misty-eyed Crystal White, who walked the final 10 miles with Abrams, nodded in agreement.
Those participating in the walk: Jeff Post, Joyce Abrams, Crystal White, Michele Music, Nancy Dowell, Cindy Bennett and Michael Howell. Other supporters included Ashley Post, Chance Horton and Jen, "You kids worked it out," Abrams said. She continued with special praise to the escorts- "Daddy" Bob Noltensmeyer, and "Mom" Jan Noltensmeyer and Beth Alcorn. "I'm so proud of my mom right now," Abrams said with emotion. "This has been such an awesome experience." Jan and Beth took turns walking and driving.
The walk raised approximately $1300 for the Disciples for a Cure Relay for Life Team/ American Cancer Society.
Abrams and the team wanted to thank everyone for supporting them throughout the walk and those who were there at the finish line.
"Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!" Abrams said. "I will never forget this!"
