Billy Joe Dobson, longtime Cushing resident, passed from this life on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at his home. A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 17, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Cushing with Pastor Mark Duer officiating. Interment will follow at Lawson Cemetery in Yale with full military honors by the United States Army and American Legion.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home.
Billy Joe was born on August 28, 1932 to Loren D. and Cynthia (Robinson) Dobson in Yale, OK. He graduated from Yale High School in 1950. After high school, Billy Joe joined the United States Army and served during the Korean Conflict. While in the army, Billy Joe served as a AAA Intelligence Chief. While serving, Billy Joe would keep in contact by letter with his true love, Janice. After being honorably discharged, Billy Joe married Janice Erickson on February 6, 1955 at the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer. Billy Joe and Janice moved to Liberal, KS, for a short time, and he worked at Welex Oil. They then moved back to Cushing, and Billy Joe started work at Montgomery Ward, where he worked for 21 years, until the store’s closure. During this time, Billy Joe and Janice welcomed their two children, Jayson and Jinni. After the closure, Billy Joe worked at OSU as a building maintenance mechanic.
Billy Joe was a true Mr. Fix-It. He would fix anything and everything at no cost, because he loved to help others. There was nothing more important to Billy Joe than his family, and he taught them all to unselfishly love and care for one another. When Billy Joe had free time, he would be found in the great outdoors, hunting and fishing. In his retirement years, he and Janice enjoyed camping in their fifth-wheel with many friends and family. In his younger years, Billy Joe would also take part in the local bowling and baseball leagues.
Billy Joe was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and veteran. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Billy Joe is survived by his wife of 62 years, Janice Dobson of the home; one son, Jayson Dobson of Cushing; one daughter, Jinni Fields of Yukon. Billy Joe is also survived by four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Billy Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Loren and Cynthia Dobson.
The family would like to thank the United States Army and the American Legion for their service and honoring Billy Joe.
