Mary Elizabeth “Bette” Roberts, a longtime Cushing resident, was carried into heaven on Friday April 14, 2017, with her family by her side at the age of 94.
Bette was born on March 15, 1923, in Ponca City, an only child to the late Albert Winston and Bessie Pauline (Oller) Jones. She spent the first seven years of her life in McAlester prior to moving to Cushing, where she lived thereafter. Bette graduated from Cushing High School in 1941 and then attended Oklahoma A & M College in Stillwater. She was a member of Phi Beta Phi Sorority for over 75 years. Bette married the love of her life Edwin Hightower Roberts on December 12, 1943, in Cushing. To this union, Linda, Lee and Jon were born. She was a selfless mom and loved her children more than life. While Ed served in WWII, she was the Society Editor of the Cushing Daily Citizen. Bette was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church for over 87 years. She was a member of UMW and held several offices. Active in her community, she was a member of PEO, Geographic Club, and DAR where she served as Chapter Regent and state secretary of OK DAR. She enjoyed many hobbies as an avid golfer and longtime member of the Cushing Country Club and Women’s Golf association, a weekly Bridge player, a Town and Gown season ticket holder, a Thunder fan and a voracious reader. She was a very talented cook and loved to bake homemade bread, mincemeat pies, and sweet rolls.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Ed Roberts in 1999.
Bette is survived by her children Linda Sue Roberts Swift of Ramrod Key, Fl., Elizabeth Lee Roberts Denney of Cushing, Jon Harper Roberts of Oklahoma City, grandchildren Brandon Van Dresser Swift, William Owen Denney, Katherine Elizabeth Kupiec and husband Craig, Taylor Zachary Roberts and wife Grace, great grandchildren Eli Hendrix, Thomas Craig Kupiec III, and Winston Hightower Kupiec.
A Celebration of Bette’s life will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Cushing. There will be a private burial at Euchee Valley Cemetery, Cushing, Ok.
Arrangements are under the direction of Palmer-Marler Funeral Home, Cushing, Ok. Donations may be made in her honor to the First United Methodist Church of Cushing or the Cushing Public Library.
