Lorene Mae Ryan
Palmer Marler Funeral Home
After a long and blessed life, Lorene Mae Ryan passed away peacefully in her sleep at home in Cushing in the early morning hours of Monday, July 3, 2017. Celebrating her arrival at Heaven’s Gate were her beloved husband, Dale, her mother Anna, her father Vernie, her older brother Kenneth and many other family and friends who went before her.
Lorene was born at home in Yale, OK, to Vernie and Anna Hacker on January 4, 1927. She was the second of three children and grew up on her family farm. Her favorite class in school was home economics. After graduating high school, Lorene worked at the soda fountain at Bell’s Drugstore in downtown Cushing. During the three years Dale served in the Navy, he and Lorene began writing letters to each other and, having grown up together, their friendship turned to courtship. Always wanting to be a June bride, Lorene married Dale on Sunday, June 1, 1947. They bought a home and property in Schlegel outside of Cushing and raised their two sons, Larry and Don. Lorene worked as a telephone operator for many years, was an avid homemaker as she raised her children and then had her own paperhanging business in Cushing until she retired. Dale and Lorene and their family were active members of the Cushing Church of Christ. Their sons got married – Larry to Sharon and Don to Kathy – and Dale and Lorene were blessed with their grandchildren: Julia, Linda, Wes, Christy and Mark.
Lorene had a sense of adventure and enjoyed traveling. She visited Maine and Canada with her sister, Europe with her granddaughter and Hawaii with friends. She also went on a mission trip to the Philippines. Lorene regularly volunteered at the food bank in Cushing, enjoyed visiting the sick and elderly at the rest home, and actively served at the Church of Christ on Linwood for as long as her health allowed. In her last years, having fought cancer and surviving a heart attack, she moved to Arizona to live with her son, Don, and his family. They returned to Cushing in 2012 and she enjoyed her last years at home in Schlegel.
Lorene is survived and will be greatly missed by her younger sister, Alberta, her two sons Larry and Don, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 7, 2017, at 10a.m. at the Linwood Church of Christ. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at Greenwood Cemetery in Yale, OK. Arrangements are being handled by the Palmer-Marler Funeral Home in Cushing. Condolences and an online guestbook are available at www.palmermarlerfh.com.
