Zora Patton

Zora Patton passed away in the Claremore Veterans Center in Claremore, OK on Sunday, September 24, 2017, at the age of 96.

Zora was the son of John Bud Patton and Caroline “Lina” Davidson Patton. He was born on Jan 6, 1921 in the rural area of Oak Grove near Cushing, OK. He attended school at the Oak Grove grade school.

Zora was employed at the Deep Rock Refinery at Cushing, OK for many years. He later was employed by Earl Bray Truck Lines, Cushing, OK, as a long haul truck driver. He was also employed by Moore Business Forms in Stillwater, OK, from which he retired.

Zora was married to Thelma Bernice Blackburn at Chandler, OK on April 5, 1941. They settled in Cushing, OK and had twin daughters Carolyn Sue and Bonnie Lou born on September 13, 1942.

Zora served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from July 19, 1940 to December 20, 1940, serving at Grand Junction Colorado.

Zora served in the United States Army during WWII with duty assignment as a mine sweeper. He served from April 22, 1944 to February 8, 1946. He was assigned to the antitank Company, 264th Infantry Regiment from September, 1944 to September 1945 and various other outfits until January, 1946 in Northern France. He operated as a member of the crew of specially trained troops in the clearing of mine fields to enable tanks to proceed without damage, against the enemies positions. He disabled mines and removed all antitank land mines. He laid out tape to establish set roads so that tanks could proceed without any danger. Zora was awarded the WWII Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, EAME Theater Ribbon, and one Bronze Service Star.

Upon his return home they resided in Cushing, OK until following the passing of wife Thelma Bernice Patton. Then Zora moved to Sand Springs, OK, and later moved to Tulsa to be close to his daughters.

Zora was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma; his daughters Carolyn Sue Patton Fisher and Bonnie Lou Patton Funkhouser; brothers: Ethan, Joel, Luther, Everett; and sister, Ines.

Zora is survived by younger sister Lela Lea Sims, granddaughters Vicki Vernon, Greta White; great granddaughters Danielle Peek and Meredith White; great grandson Drew White; and great great grandson Brock Peek; nephews: Jack Patton, Luther John Patton, and Daniel Sims.

Memorial service will be held Monday, October 2, 2017, at 10.00 AM at the Chapel at Memorial Park Cemetery, Tulsa, OK. Interment will follow at Parkland Cemetery, Parkland, OK.
